Sealand: Ahead of the regulation & ahead of the curve

Ahead of regulation, South African brand Sealand turned their products into Digital Product Passports with ITL's Xplore.

Every product has a story, a narrative of materials, craftsmanship and its journey through time. While brands have traditionally shared these stories in various ways, the rise of digital product passports is transforming transparency into a universal concept. In South Africa, one pioneering brand has proactively embraced this innovation, adopting technology andprinted QR labels with ITL’s DPP solution, Xplore, rather than waiting for regulation. With an aim to elevate transparency but also strengthen consumer engagement.

Sealand exemplifies its commitment by producing durable gear from upcycled, recycled, and responsibly sourced materials designed to standthe test of time. Their philosophy advocates for longevity, reducing the needfor frequent replacements. To bring this ethos to life, Sealand uses ITL’sXplore, powered by Tappr, to meticulously map their upstream supply chain, tracktheir data and deploy compelling product passports. These digital passports, accessible via QR code, enable consumers to register their product so itcan be reunited with them if lost and offer a window into the product’s journey.

Brayden Raw, Sealand’s Head of Sustainability, emphasises,"The development of our Digital Product Passport is a natural extension of(our) commitment. A practical step towardtaking accountability for our supply chain, offering full transparency to ourcustomers, and recognising the value of the suppliers we work with."

Sealand also invites consumers to explore limited glimpses of a product’s DPP on their website, offering insight before purchase. WithITL’s Xplore, Sealand are poised for expansion across South Africa and beyond, bolstered by Trace to streamline supplier data and meet market demands for full supply chain transparency.
